When we set out to craft the perfect Pilsner, we started at the beginning. The original brewers of Pilsner, in the Czech city of Pilsen, conceived of a beer designed specifically for their unique region and climate. Lush, green and temperate, rain drenched hillsides channeling clean water through the surrounding valleys, into cool, clear streams that flow with cold water year round. Astoria, like Pilsen, lies at the confluence of a multitude of rivers and streams, under a blanket of temperate weather, surrounded by forests.
We crafted Pilsner to showcase the unique qualities of our water and our region. Dozens of trials and test batches later, we’re proud to present a beer so good we named it Pilsner.
Astoria’s single source of drinking water is the Bear Creek Watershed – owned and managed by the city since 1936. This 3,700 acre swathe of community-owned forest feeds a series of reservoirs that furnish the city of Astoria and surrounding water districts with the highest quality, slow-sand filtered drinking water. Coastal clouds colliding with the hills and mountains east of Astoria cause rainfall on the vast, protected watershed and that rain makes its way down innumerable wild creeks and streams toward Bear Creek, the reservoirs and the city’s water pipes. Because it comes from the clouds, Astoria’s water is soft, neutral and balanced – the perfect water for a Pilsner.
Pilsner will be available year-round in 12oz 6packs anywhere you get good beer beginning Fall 2025.
The main ingredient in beer is water. Through our partnerships with local farms and growers, we’re among the first to trial new experimental hops and hop products and we rely on family farms in Oregon and Washington for the majority of our grains, but our beer starts and ends with Astoria Water. That’s one reason that 1% of all the proceeds from our 12oz cans (including Pilsner) goes straight to local, environmentally-focused non profits like Oregon Parks Forever and North Coast Surfrider Foundation through 1% for the Planet.
