How did a mathematician (and preacher’s son) write the quirkiest, best-selling story about a little girl who falls into a rabbit hole and then walks through a mirror? Lewis Carroll was on the autism spectrum, and this condition fueled a genius for using language–and telling a story–in a completely new way. His book is a guide to the world of autistic children and gives us a greater understanding of how ASD shapes the kaleidoscopic way that children process the world around them.
Dr. Julie Brown, author of WRITERS ON THE SPECTRUM: HOW AUTISM AND ASPERGER’S SYNDROME INFLUENCE LITERARY WRITING (London: Jessica Kingsley Publishers), teaches English at Clatsop Community College in Astoria. This winter she will be teaching ENG 263: Autism in Literature.
