Nature Matters: Car Tires, Coho Salmon & Water

Why were coho salmon dying? What can we do about chemical pollution and salmon? Ed Kolodziej will tell the story of how PNW coho salmon returning to spawn in the Seattle area were dying after it rained. After several years of work at the Center of Urban Waters, collaborating and using advanced mass spectrometry, researchers identified “6PPD-quinone”, a transformation product of the ubiquitous tire rubber antioxidant 6PPD, as the primary chemical reason for coho salmon mortality. These results indicated that tire rubbers contained toxic chemicals, especially for salmonids, and that protecting water quality would require carefully managing tire wear particles and roadway runoff, especially near sensitive habitats, salmonids, and small creeks.

Ed Kolodziej is a Professor at the University of Washington with joint faculty appointments at Environmental Sciences at UW-Tacoma and in Civil and Environmental Engineering at UW-Seattle. He also is a Principal Investigator at the Center for Urban Waters (Tacoma, WA) where Ed and his research group use advanced mass spectrometry and hard work to investigate contaminant fate and transport, build effective treatment systems, and ensure ecosystem health.

Doors open at 6pm with food and beverages available via the Taproom window, talk starts at 7pm. All ages welcome and never a cover.

Nature Matters, a lively conversation about the intersection of nature and culture, takes place on the fourth Thursday of each month from October through May. Nature Matters is hosted by Lewis and Clark National Historical Park in partnership with the North Coast Watershed Association, the Lewis & Clark National Park Association, and the Fort George Brewery + Public House.

The Thursday Lecture Series is a reoccurring community lecture series every Thursday, October through May. Thank you to our 2023/2024 Partners –
