During WWII, 324 Liberty ships were built at Henry Kaiser’s “emergency” shipyards in Portland, earning the city the unofficial title of “Liberty Ship Capitol of the World.” Twenty-seven percent of the workforce was comprised of women, prompting Kaiser to establish a 24-hour childcare service. Also, Kaiser provided medical coverage for all his employees, leading to the creation of one of the nation’s foremost healthcare providers today.
Nautical and outdoor journalist Peter Marsh’s Liberty Factory presentation focuses on the social side of this forgotten chapter in our local history.
