Nature Matters: Oregon’s North Coast Snorkel Surveys for Salmon and Trout Habitat

Salmon habitat is the cornerstone of watershed restoration and enhancement work for Oregon’s North Coast. As we learn how to steward our freshwater ecosystems, it’s important to see if the fish benefit from it when they return to complete their life cycle! In 2025 the North Coast Watershed Association (NCWA), the Necanicum Watershed Council (NWC), Bio surveys LLC and our partners completed the 3rd consecutive year of salmon and trout habitat snorkel surveys encompassing the full cohort of Coho salmon, which have a 3-year life cycle.

The survey covered over 200 miles of streams and collected data on plants, water temperature, stream habitat features, fish numbers, barriers, and even beaver dams along the way! There is so much to share from this endeavor and the creation of the first basin-scale baseline for salmon and trout populations for this area. This data will become a key tool for us and our watershed partners to measure the effectiveness of our restoration and enhancement projects. Join Jeremy Lees of Bio-surveys LLC and Graham Klag, Executive Director of the NCWA, for a deep dive into this incredible information about the health of our local ecosystems!

Nature Matters, a lively conversation about the intersection of nature and culture, takes place on the fourth Thursday of each month from October through May.
